Drive Safely – Especially When Your Kids Are in the Car

The whole family is driving for the weekend. Being in a car accident can feel like a bad dream, but if your child is in the car too when you have an accident it can be an absolute nightmare. You can’t control the actions of the other drivers on the road; all you can really do is drive as safely as you can, and follow these tips to help you make sure you are driving your safest when your child is in the car.

Keep Your Family Safe

Taking steps to keep your kids safe in the car really doesn’t take that much time or effort, and it is certainly worth it. Make sure you:

  • Don’t get distracted. Yes, your infant in the backseat screaming is about the most distracting thing there is! But if you find that you can’t pay attention to the road because you are concerned about your child (or you are just getting frustrated), pull over somewhere safe and out of traffic, check your baby, and take a few deep breaths. And of course, don’t let yourself get distracted by texts or phone calls, either.
  • Make sure they are buckled in. Unbelievably, many people still don’t wear their seat belts, even though it is so simple to do and it can save their life. Make sure both you and the kids are buckled in before you ever even start the car.
  • Have your kids in the right car seat. It is important to make sure your child is in the right car seat for their age, weight, and height, but it is just as important to ensure that the car seat is installed correctly. The US Department of Transportation website can help you to find the right car seat and can even direct you to a local inspection station where an expert can make sure it is in your car properly.
